Peoria and the surrounding West Valley have experienced significant growth through economic development, population growth and population shifts. City leadership determined that an aviation unit would be highly advantageous—not only for Peoria, but also for the broader West Valley.

Chief Thomas Intrieri describes the aviation unit as a force multiplier. Regardless of how many officers are responding to a call, the air unit can provide the equivalent of several additional officers through oversight and overwatch.

The helicopter provides officer presence, visual awareness and the ability to scan a large area quickly. The chief explains that the air unit cannot simply be replaced by a drone. Although drones may supplement air support in the future, the helicopter provides a unique combination of presence, communication, observation and operational support.

The unit is currently in its training phase. During training flights, the crew has already had opportunities to assist with active calls.

In one case, a 13-year-old girl ran away from home into a desert area after taking medication that was not prescribed to her. After an extensive ground search, the aviation unit was able to use its equipment to recognize her location and identify her heat signature. Because of the unit’s timely response, paramedics were able to reach her and take her to the hospital. She later made a full recovery.

The chief emphasizes how meaningful it is for families and first responders to have an aircraft capable of locating people quickly and helping bring them to safety.

He acknowledges that aviation units are expensive resources, but says public safety cannot be measured only by cost. The purpose is to save lives, protect officers, hold people accountable when they harm others and help ensure that officers return safely to their families.

Having the necessary resources, training and equipment gives Peoria the highest possible chance of finding citizens, protecting the community and supporting officers in the field.
